A mobility scooter is a personal vehicle that is intended to help those who are mobility challenged move freely and without strain on their muscles. If you have ever shopped for a mobility scooter, you may seem overwhelmed at the number of different models and designs available today. There are many different types and models, but there is no need to be overwhelmed, because they are all designed to fulfill specific needs. Once you analyze your needs, it much easier to evaluate the different options and find one that will fit your particular situation.

One type of mobility scooter is the travel scooter. Travel scooters are designed for those that would like to be able to easily transport their mobility scooter. They typically break into several pieces that can fit into a trunk, back seat of a car, or can easily be transported on an airplane. The travel scooter is designed with weight in mind, and when the mobility scooter is disassembled, the heaviest piece usually weighs around 30 pounds. This makes it very easy to move and ensures that you will not need a special vehicle wheelchair lift installed to transport your mobility scooter. Depending on your specific physical condition, many people find it possible to transport a travel scooter with little or no outside assistance.

Travel scooters usually utilize a 3-wheeled configuration. A 3-wheeled scooter has increased maneuverability, because it greatly reduces the scooters turn radius. This also serves to reduce the weight of the mobility scooter. This increased maneuverability comes at a cost however, because they generally do not have as high of a weight capacity as 4-wheeled scooters. 4-wheeled scooters also have better stability because they spread the weight out more evenly between the front and back. A typical travel scooter has a weight capacity of around 250 pounds. Not all travel scooters utilize the 3-wheel configuration, so it is possible to get the advantages of a 4-wheeled scooter and a travel scooter. 4-wheeled travel scooters will have a slightly higher weight, size, and a larger turning radius though, making it impractical for certain applications.

Depending on the model, travel scooters usually have a range of around 12 miles and an average speed of about 4.2 miles per hour. This range can often be increased by upgrading the batteries, but this can also add weight to the scooter. Since this range is lower than a traditional full sized mobility scooter, it is important to plan your route with attention to the state of your charge. Modern travel scooters are very reliable and well built. Many people purchase travel scooters because of their ability to be easily dismantled and moved, but use them mostly around the house and neighborhood.

For many a travel scooter is the right choice because it can easily be transported without requiring a separate vehicle mounted lift, offers an adequate weight capacity, has good maneuverability, and does not take up that much space. A travel scooter is often less expensive than a full sized mobility scooter, which can make it a very attractive purchase for many individuals.

The most important thing to do is regular oil changes for four stroke engines. Two stroke engines consume their engine oil, so you don't have to worry about changing it. Our scooters only hold about a quart of engine oil. The bigger Yamaha scooters have oil filters, but the Hondas do not have filters (just a small screen). Given the small displacement (engine size) of most scooters, they tend to get run hard. The small amount of oil, lack of oil filter and high rpm usage leads to oil breakdown much quicker than your in automobile. I change my scooter oil every 1000 miles. This may sound extreme, but consider two points: How long does it take you to go 1000 miles? Unless you are riding a 250cc scoot on the highway, it will probably take you a few months. It's not like you need to change it every week. If you are putting on a lot of highway miles, the engine is probably not being stressed with a lot of stop-and-go riding. You also are less likely to run the engine through a lot of hot/cold cycles. In this case you may be able to extend the oil change time. But I wouldn't :>)
